To demand resumption of railway concessions

Highlighting the growing challenges faced by senior citizens, BJP MLA Ganesh Naik has called for the creation of a separate ministry dedicated to addressing their issues. Speaking at the 44th anniversary of the Maharashtra Senior Citizens Federation (FESCOM) in Nerul, Naik assured that he would discuss this proposal with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He also pledged efforts to reinstate the 50% railway fare concession for senior citizens, which was discontinued during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event, held at the Senior Citizens Bhavan in Nerul, was attended by prominent figures including FESCOM President Dr. Annasaheb Tekale, All India Senior Citizens Federation President Vishwasrao Bhadane, former FESCOM President Arun Rode, and others.

Naik shared his observations on the diverse challenges faced by senior citizens, from abandonment by children to the dedication of those who care for their elderly parents. He emphasized his commitment to supporting senior citizens during his tenure in government, including initiatives in Navi Mumbai. He recounted directing Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde to establish a senior citizens' help desk and a dedicated helpline, which were promptly implemented. Additionally, a recreation center was set up, providing a much-needed space for the elderly to engage and socialize.

During the event, Dr. Annasaheb Tekale elaborated on several issues faced by senior citizens and highlighted achievements driven by FESCOM’s persistent advocacy. These include free ST bus travel for individuals aged 75 and above, bi-annual free health check-ups for senior citizens over 60, and the establishment of senior citizen help rooms in police stations. However, he stressed the urgent need to restore the railway fare concession, particularly for rural senior citizens who are heavily affected by its discontinuation.

Vishwasrao Bhadane, President of the All India Senior Citizens Federation, proposed the creation of a dedicated constituency in the Legislative Council for senior citizens. He argued that this would enable a more focused representation of their issues at the government level.
