Calls for safety measures

MLA Manda Mhatre raises concerns over the Neelkamal boat tragedy near Elephanta Island. Urges strict safety measures, inquiry into overloading, and aid for victims’ families

Navi Mumbai: In the ongoing winter session in Nagpur, MLA Manda Mhatre of Belapur assembly constituency raised a question of “point of propriety” regarding the tragic accident involving the Neelkamal passenger boat, which was en route from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. On December 18, around 4 p.m., a Navy speed boat reportedly collided with the Neelkamal ferry carrying 80 tourists and passengers, resulting in the boat taking on water and eventually sinking. The accident has claimed 13 lives so far.

Manda Mhatre urged the government to identify the culprits and enforce strict action. She pointed out that, despite designated waterways for different types of boats and buoys placed for navigational guidance, some passenger ferry operators disregard safety regulations, leading to accidents.

Highlighting additional concerns, Mhatre mentioned the impact on local fishermen from Koliwadas such as Diwale, Vashi Gaon, Trombe, Uran, and others. She noted that cargo ships and ferry boats often damage fishing nets and contribute to maritime accidents.

Mhatre also called for an investigation into whether ferry boats carry more passengers than their designated capacity, recommending that passenger limits be strictly enforced for safety. Furthermore, she urged the state government to provide financial assistance and justice to the families of those who perished in the accident.

“An inquiry must be conducted to ensure fairness and safety, and to prevent such tragic incidents from happening in the future,” Mhatre emphasized during the winter session.
