During the ongoing winter session in Nagpur, MLA Manda Mhatre from the Belapur assembly constituency has voiced concern over the halted conservation efforts at the historically rich Navi Mumbai Belapur Fort. Urging immediate action, MLA Manda has called upon the assembly to instruct the Archaeology Department to promptly resume the crucial conservation work.

The Navi Mumbai - Belapur Fort, a symbol of architectural significance dating back to the Portuguese era, proudly stands atop a hillock overlooking the Belapur creek. Constructed by Chimaji Appa, the fort holds historical eminence in Maharashtra, originally serving as a monitoring point for sea routes and evolving into a cultural heritage icon in Navi Mumbai.

CIDCO had initiated an ambitious Rs. 18 crore beautification and conservation project for the Belapur Fort, encompassing various developmental tasks such as fortification reinforcement, construction of new stone steps, fort tower restoration, and the revitalization of essential amenities like the amphitheatre, cafeteria, parking lot, and food mall. Unfortunately, political interference led to the suspension of the project, hindering the comprehensive efforts.

Compounded by the damage sustained during the monsoon, the incomplete work faced further deterioration due to torrential rains, emphasizing the immediate need to recommence the conservation initiatives for the preservation of this historical gem.

MLA Manda Mhatre stressed the paramount importance of safeguarding the Belapur Fort, emphasizing its role not just as a historical monument but as a cultural asset that significantly contributes to the identity of Navi Mumbai's residents. She called upon the assembly to intervene and direct the Archaeology Department to expedite the restoration work.
