MMR reels under heavy monsoon showers

Navi Mumbai/Thane/Kalyan: After weeks of below-normal rainfall, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) finally received widespread showers, bringing relief to water reservoirs but causing severe waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruption across Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan-Dombivli.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert across most parts of the MMR until July 5. A Red Alert has been issued for Thane on July 4 and for Raigad on July 3 and 4, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.

According to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), the city recorded an average rainfall of 105.46 mm between 8.30 a.m and 6.30 p.m on July 1. Digha received the highest rainfall at 139.80 mm, followed by Digha (139.40 mm) and Airoli (128.40 mm), while Vashi recorded the lowest at 57.60 mm. Civic officials also reported 12 tree-fall incidents, two injuries, and five cases of waterlogging.

Several roads in Kharghar, Kamothe, and Kalamboli were submerged, including the main road connecting Jalvayu Vihar to Sector 30, causing major traffic disruptions. In Kalyan-Dombivli, water accumulated at several low-lying locations, including Ahilyabai Chowk, despite annual pre-monsoon drain-cleaning works.

In Thane, Mayor Sharmila Rohit Pimpalolkar inspected flood-prone areas and directed officials to clear waterlogged locations immediately. "Citizens should not face inconvenience during the monsoon. Municipal staff must work on a war footing to remove stagnant water and ensure proper drainage," she said.

Commuters also reported slow-moving traffic on the Thane-Belapur Highway, Sion-Panvel Highway and Manpada Road.

"Even a few hours of rain bring traffic to a standstill. Authorities need permanent solutions instead of temporary measures every monsoon," said a commuter stranded on the Sion-Panvel Highway.

Another resident remarked, "Roads turn into rivers every year despite claims of pre-monsoon preparedness. We expect better planning and faster response from civic authorities."
