Commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) could soon benefit from direct local train services between Virar and Panvel as the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has incorporated the Panvel-Vasai Suburban Railway Project into the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3B. Once local operations commence on this route, an extension to Virar is expected to follow.
In response to increasing demand for improved connectivity, MRVC has proposed constructing a third and fourth railway line between Panvel and Vasai. According to an official, this addition aligns with the Virar-Vasai section already covered under MUTP 3A, which includes plans for a fifth and sixth railway line between Borivali and Virar. The updated proposal is now under consideration for implementation.
A senior MRVC official emphasized the importance of the project, stating that the new corridor would enhance accessibility to Northern MMR, strengthen east-west connectivity, and integrate seamlessly with the existing suburban rail network. The initiative aims to expand travel options for commuters, allowing suburban train operations in multiple directions, including Panvel to both Borivali and Virar. Once operational, this expanded rail network is expected to ease congestion and offer faster and more efficient transportation across the region.
Panvel railway station, a key transit hub located just 10 minutes from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, already connects local train services to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Additionally, construction is underway for a separate suburban corridor between Panvel and Karjat, further strengthening regional connectivity.
Currently, only a few Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services operate between Panvel, Diva, and Vasai with limited frequency, leaving commuters with restricted options. There has been a long-standing demand for a dedicated suburban local train service on the Panvel-Vasai route, which many believe will not only improve travel but also accelerate urban development in the region.
The idea of a Panvel-Virar suburban corridor is not new, having initially been included in MUTP 3 before being shelved. However, with renewed focus on expanding Mumbai’s suburban railway network, authorities are optimistic about turning this long-awaited project into reality.
