In a bid to enhance ease of travel across Mumbai and its surrounding regions, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced the introduction of ‘Mumbai One’, a comprehensive single-card transport system that will serve multiple modes of public transport.
The proposed smart card is designed to be used across the suburban railway, Metro, Monorail, buses, and various other modes of transport operating within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The initiative aims to simplify the daily commute for millions of passengers by consolidating access to different transport services into one unified payment solution.
Fadnavis also informed that discussions with the Railway Minister have already taken place regarding the inclusion of the suburban railway system in this initiative. The process of integrating the railway network is underway and is expected to be completed within a month.
In regards to Konkan Railway, Fadnavis revealed that he has formally requested the Indian Railways to consider a merger of the Konkan Railway into the national network. The move is aimed at strengthening the financial stability of the Konkan Railway and improving its operational sustainability in the long term.
