As dusk sets in, the 100-feet road near Darulfalah Masjid in Mumbra comes alive with the aroma of sizzling kebabs, fragrant biryanis, and an array of mouthwatering sweets. The bustling street, famously known as Khau Gali, transforms into a food lover’s paradise during the holy month of Ramadan.
For years, this vibrant street has been a culinary hub, attracting locals and visitors alike who come to break their fast during the month of Ramadan. Asiya Khan, a resident of Mumbra and a regular visitor to Khau Gali, describes the experience as unmissable.
“Ramadan is the best time to visit Khau Gali. I come here multiple times with my friends to enjoy the delicious yet budget-friendly food. Phirni is my all-time favorite, but one should definitely try the haleem as well,” says Asiya.
One of the major pitstops of Khau Gali is Burhanpur Mawa Jalebi, run by Asghar Ali. Known for its rich and syrupy mawa jalebi, the shop has been a must-visit spot for over 15 years. To cater to the Ramadan crowd, Ali sets up an additional stall every year.
“People from across Mumbai visit us to try our mawa jalebi,” he says with pride. “During Ramadan, we serve over 500 customers daily. To maintain freshness, we prepare our sweets in small batches, and some items are made directly to order. Our goal is to provide quality sweets at affordable prices, which is why we haven’t increased our rates in four years.”
Another iconic eatery is A-1 Mustafa Falooda and Food Corner, a household name since 1965.
“We have been serving traditional dishes like khichda, mutton pulao, firni, and seekh paratha for decades. These recipes have been passed down through generations, ensuring the authentic flavors remain unchanged,” Rashid Mustafa, the owner said.
Among the must-try eateries in Mumbra’s Khau Gali are Al-Habibi’s Arabian shawarma, a crowd-favourite for its juicy, well-seasoned shawarma. Sahil Restaurant’s Haleem, a rich, slow-cooked meat and lentil dish, perfect for iftar. Ballimaran Nahari Restaurant’s Nalli and bong nihari, offering flavourful, slow-cooked meat curries. JJ Jalebi’s malpua.
To accommodate the increasing number of visitors, the MSP Foundation has arranged dedicated parking spaces and stationed volunteers in Amrut Nagar to prevent road congestion caused by haphazard parking.
