The world of music suffered an irreplaceable loss as legendary percussionist Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the age of 73 in a San Francisco hospital. Known as a maestro who elevated the tabla to international acclaim, Zakir Hussain leaves behind a legacy that resonates with music lovers across the globe.
Recipient of India’s highest civilian honours, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Vibhushan (2023), Zakir Hussain was a true ambassador of Indian classical music. His unmatched virtuosity and dedication made the tabla, traditionally rooted in Hindustani classical music, a global phenomenon. His remarkable career also included four Grammy Awards, with three awarded at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year.
Born on March 9, 1951, Zakir Hussain was the son of the legendary tabla player Ustad Allarakha. His contributions extended far beyond the Indian classical sphere, as his collaborations with global icons like Yo-Yo Ma, Charles Lloyd, Edgar Meyer, Mickey Hart, and George Harrison brought Indian music to new audiences worldwide, reinforcing his status as a global cultural ambassador.
In one of his last notable public performances in December 2023, Zakir Hussain mesmerized a packed audience at the CIDCO Auditorium in Vashi. His charisma, humility, and exceptional rhythm left an indelible impression on attendees. During this event, he was felicitated with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Keli Festival, acknowledging his profound contributions to music.
Mattannur Shankaran Kutty, a renowned percussionist who honored Zakir Hussain at the Vashi concert, reflected, “Zakirji had immense respect for all forms of music, including Kerala’s traditional percussions. His loss is monumental for India and the world.”
Noted filmmaker and Nerul resident Ramachandran K Keli described Zakir Hussain as “a banyan tree of Indian music, deeply rooted in tradition. His music transcended entertainment, embodying the very essence of culture, ethics, and artistic integrity. His humility and respect for fellow artists are exemplary and will continue to inspire generations.”
