Legal action warned for violation
To ensure peace and public safety during the upcoming Diwali festival, the Navi Mumbai Police have issued a ban on the use of firecrackers producing noise levels above 125 decibels and have prohibited bursting any firecrackers on the streets. The restrictions, which came into effect on October 23, will remain in place throughout the Diwali celebrations from October 28 to November 3, and include a complete ban on firecracker use from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Rashmi Nandedkar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Branch of Navi Mumbai Police, stated that the measures are intended to prevent incidents that could threaten citizens' lives and public property, particularly from anti-social elements who may exploit the noise created by firecrackers. In addition to the noise level restrictions, bursting firecrackers within 50 feet of public roads is also strictly prohibited.
The production and sale of firecrackers exceeding the 125-decibel limit have also been banned. The police have warned that violations will result in legal action under Section 131 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.
Sky lanterns also banned during the Festival
The police have also prohibited the use, sale, and stocking of sky lanterns within the jurisdiction of all police stations under the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate. The ban aims to prevent potential fire hazards posed by lanterns that could fall and cause serious incidents. Those found violating this order will face legal consequences under Section 223 of the Indian Code of Justice, 2023.
