Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate proposes reorganization with new circles and police stations

top-news

The Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate has proposed a significant reorganization plan to the state government, aimed at addressing the growing law and order challenges caused by rapid urbanization. The proposal includes the addition of a new Circle-3 and four new police stations, intended to relieve the pressure on existing facilities. However, a decision on the proposal is expected only after the Assembly elections.

The commissionerate currently covers areas from Digha to Belapur and extends to Panvel, Kharghar, Taloja, and Uran under the Panvel Municipal Corporation. Since the city's planned development began in the 1970s through CIDCO, Navi Mumbai has emerged as a hub for education and IT, with major infrastructure projects like the international airport, metro rail, and sea bridge accelerating urban growth. The increased population has put added stress on the police force, necessitating the reorganization plan.

Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe has outlined the proposal based on factors such as geographic distribution, population density, industrial growth, and law enforcement needs. As part of the reorganization, Rabale Police Station in Circle-1, which manages areas including Airoli, Ghansoli, and surrounding villages, will be divided to create a new Ghansoli Police Station and a separate Airoli Police Station. In Circle-2, a separate police station is proposed for the rapidly growing Karanjade node under Panvel City Police Station. The plan also includes merging Uran and Mora stations into a reconstructed Uran-Mora Police Station in the proposed Circle-3.

The ongoing development of the Navi Mumbai International Airport has highlighted the need for a dedicated airport police station, and the rapidly expanding Dronagiri node in Uran is also expected to receive its own station. Additionally, the government has already approved a new police station for the Ulwe node due to its rapid urbanization, with the Ulwe Police Station recently inaugurated.

If approved, Circle-1 will have seven police stations, including Rabale MIDC, the new Ghansoli, Airoli, and Turbhe stations, overseen by an Assistant Commissioner for Rabale Division. Circle-2 will feature eight stations, with an Assistant Commissioner for Kharghar Division supervising Kharghar, Kalamboli, Kamothe, and Taloja, while Panvel Division will manage Panvel City, Panvel Taluka, Khandeshwar, and Karanjade. The proposed Circle-3 will include nine stations, covering areas like CBD, NRI Sagari, Nerul, Sanpada, Ulwe, Nhava-Sheva, Uran-Mora, Dronagiri, and the airport.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Headquarters Sanjkumar Patil stated that the proposal is designed with a 20-year outlook to accommodate the expected growth in Navi Mumbai. Efforts are underway to secure government approval for the plan, which, if sanctioned, would increase the number of police stations in the commissionerate to 24.
