Maharashtra government has turned down the restructuring plan submitted by the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate to increase its operational efficiency and make it better suited to address the needs of the rapidly growing city.
The long-pending proposal involved the creation of an additional zone (Zone-3, to be headed by a DCP-level officer), two new divisions (each to be led by ACP-level officer), and bifurcating existing police stations to create four new ones. The Navi Mumbai police currently has two zones.
The state government’s lukewarm response has resulted in Navi Mumbai police submitting a revised proposal which comprises creation of a separate zone, two new divisions, and a dedicated police station to cater to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The Home Department's decision on the revised proposal is expected shortly.
With Navi Mumbai growing rapidly, the existing organisational structure has been found less suited to address the demands of the rising population and increasing law and order challenges. Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe had proposed the comprehensive restructuring plan to increase the operational efficiency of the force and to make it nimble footed to address the existing and future needs of the rapidly growing city.
Sanjay Kumar Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters)
"Considering Navi Mumbai’s geography, rising crime rates, law and order challenges, population growth, and industrial expansion, we have submitted a revised proposal for Zone-3, two new divisions, and the Airport Police Station. We hope to receive approval from the state government soon."
