State records substantial rainfall this monsoon season
While the state of Maharashtra has witnessed substantial rainfall this monsoon season, Navi Mumbai, in contrast, has experienced comparatively lower levels of precipitation. In fact, the city has recorded its second lowest rainfall in the past 14 years, with a total of 2287.61 mm of rainfall so far. The lowest rainfall in the last eight years was in 2016, with 1614.04 mm, and the highest occurred in 2019, with a record-breaking 4419.11 mm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has expressed concerns that the insufficient rainfall in the state during this monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September, may lead to drought-like conditions. Although September typically sees increased rainfall, the situation remains the same. Nevertheless, the Konkan coastal belt, including Navi Mumbai, has been an exception and has received adequate rainfall.
In particular, the Morbe dam, a key water source for Navi Mumbai, has benefited from abundant rainfall this year. The dam area has received 3298.80 mm of rainfall, and the dam is currently at 97.54% water storage capacity, with the water level reaching 87.51 meters. The dam reaches full capacity at 88 meters. This surplus water supply has lightened concerns about drinking water availability for Navi Mumbai residents. However, the overall water levels in the city have still decreased.
Presently, there is no rainfall in Navi Mumbai, as it is not an agricultural season. Nonetheless, the significantly reduced average rainfall this year is a matter of concern. As of September 13, the city has received 2287.61 mm of rainfall, marking the second lowest recorded amount in the past 14 years.
