New railway station between Thane and Mulund to alleviate Thane's transit woes

top-news

MP Rajan Vichare led an inspection of the forthcoming railway station situated between Thane and Mulund, marking a significant step towards enhancing the region's transport infrastructure. The inspection was attended by officials from Central Railway, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), and various other key stakeholders, highlighting the concert efforts to address the growing commuters’ demand in the area.

The genesis of this endeavour traces back to the Integrated Mobility Plan devised in 2008 during MP Rajan Vichare's tenure as Mayor, highlighting the imperative for a new railway station to accommodate the escalating passenger influx. Subsequently, the proposal gained traction in the Lok Sabha in 2015 and secured approval, setting the stage for its realization.

Navigating bureaucratic hurdles and legal intricacies, the project encountered delays, notably due to pending litigation and regulatory approvals. However, relentless advocacy culminated in a breakthrough when the High Court lifted the stay on development, clearing the path for progress.

The proposed railway station, spanning 14.83 acres, promises to alleviate congestion at Thane station, a key transit hub witnessing daily footfall between 7 to 8 lakh passengers. Boasting a modern infrastructure, the station will feature a G+2 storied building and a dedicated home platform among its three platforms, facilitating seamless connectivity.

Integral to the station's design is the incorporation of pedestrian bridges, parking facilities, and expansive operational zones, emblematic of Thane Municipal Corporation's commitment to bolstering urban mobility under the Smart City initiative.

Upon completion, the station is poised to cater to diverse commuter routes, including connectivity to Mumbai and destinations like Karjat and Kalyan. By redistributing passenger traffic, it is anticipated to alleviate congestion by up to 31 percent at Thane station and 21 percent at Mulund station, offering respite to weary travellers navigating the bustling suburban network.

As construction progresses, the new railway station embodies a beacon of progress, symbolizing collaborative endeavours towards fortifying the region's transit backbone. With an anticipated completion timeline set for December 2025, residents eagerly await the dawn of a new era in seamless connectivity and enhanced mobility.
