The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Mumbai organized a captivating fashion show to promote Khadi as part of the Khadi Mahotsav 2023 celebrations on October 6th at the institute's campus in Kharghar. The show, titled 'Spinning Stories of Inheritance,' featured the creative work of students and alumni from the Fashion Design Department, showcasing their expertise in the realms of Khadi and handloom textiles.

The primary objective of this event was to redefine the perception of Khadi, recognizing that renowned designers worldwide are bestowing upon Khadi a distinct and contemporary identity. The institute took it upon itself to echo the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, highlighting Khadi's role in reshaping the nation's fashion landscape, especially for the youth.

Khadi, known for its comfort and simplicity, is a globally recognized fabric woven on the spinning wheel. It holds a significant place in Indian culture and history, particularly as a symbol of the Freedom movement during British Rule, inspiring countless freedom fighters under the leadership of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore, Khadi has always been a symbol of national pride.

The inauguration of the event was graced by Ms. Mehar Castelino, a distinguished figure in the fashion industry, and Mr. Nelson Jaffery, Design Head of Birla Cellulose. Several designers also made contributions to the event, including Tejashri with Mogasu sarees, Jinisha representing the Around brand, Leena Das from Village Art, Prashansa showcasing Reshamandi, Anubhuti presenting Anubhuti Designs, and Aditya featuring Proth. Students specializing in styling and heritage textiles creatively draped these designer garments, adding their artistic flair to the showcase.

Furthermore, students specializing in Craft-Based Product Design (CBPD) played a pivotal role in enhancing the grandeur of the show. Under the module of Craft-Based Product Development (CBPD), students engaged in dialogues and collaborations with various weavers from different handloom clusters across India, resulting in the creation of stunning designs. Every aspect of the show, from music to modeling, was meticulously managed by the students of NIFT Mumbai's Fashion Design department. From conceptualization to execution, students were deeply involved in every stage of the event.

The participants shared their insights, stating, "The entire perspective was first conceptualized, and discussions and brainstorming sessions took place. Plans were meticulously crafted for each design, and blueprints were prepared. Each look was brought to life creatively through paper draping before being translated into real-life creations. We applied the techniques learned in our specialized subjects to contribute and showcase ourselves as designers."
