NMMC announces two days of water shutdown

In response to the looming water shortage crisis, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken the drastic step of implementing a two-day water shutdown per week in the city.

Navi Mumbai, often celebrated for its abundant water resources sourced from the Morbe Dam, is facing unprecedented challenges due to the dwindling water supply. While the dam currently holds enough water to last until August, the municipality has decided to proactively reduce water consumption to ensure sustainable usage.

Initially, the NMMC had implemented a one-day water shutdown per week in the evenings to conserve water. However, with concerns about prolonged rainfall exacerbating the water shortage, the corporation has escalated its efforts by increasing the water cut.

Effective from June 4, 2024, until further notice, the two-day water shutdown will be implemented across seven divisions in the evening. The shutdown schedule is as follows:

1) Belapur: Monday and Thursday

2) Koparkhairane: Tuesday and Saturday

3) Ghansoli: Wednesday and Sunday

4) Vashi: Thursday and Monday

5) Airoli: Friday (one day)

6) Nerul: Tuesday and Saturday

7) Turbhe: Sunday and Wednesday

Arvije Shinde, Additional City Engineer at the NMMC, emphasized the importance of this water conservation measure in light of the city's water supply challenges. The division-wise schedule aims to distribute the impact of the water shutdowns evenly across the city.
