In a determined effort to reduce air pollution, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched an intensive cleaning campaign across the city. Regular cleaning by Swachhta Mitras and Swachhta Sakhis has been a staple in the NMMC area, but the increasing accumulation of dust and soil along major roads has necessitated a more robust response.
Key roads, including the Sion-Panvel Highway, Thane-Belapur Marg, and Amra Marg, as well as inner city routes, have seen significant build-up of soil due to heavy traffic and large vehicles transporting construction and demolition materials. This accumulated soil, propelled into the air by vehicle speed, has contributed to rising dust levels, prompting action from the municipal authorities.
Under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the Deep Cleaning Drive commenced on December 30, 2024. The campaign prioritised effective implementation, even on Sundays and public holidays, to ensure thorough cleaning across all areas.
The initiative also extended to neglected wastelands. Additional Commissioner Mr. Sunil Pawar coordinated the daily operations, assigning specific areas within each department for cleaning.
Teams focused on removing hardened soil from roadsides and footpaths, while modern fogging machines were employed to spray water and clean the roads. Processed and purified water from NMMC's sewage treatment centres was used in these efforts, reflecting a sustainable approach to urban cleanliness.
On Sunday, January 12, comprehensive cleaning activities were carried out in several locations, including from Ghansoli Nalla to Dharan Lake Road in Koparkhairane, from Sector 11 Saibaba Circle to Bhagwat Road and Agri Chowk in the Ghansoli Division, and from Vodafone Corner to Sandoz Company in the Digha Division’s MIDC area. The campaign also targeted other departmental office areas.
Feedback from residents indicates a positive impact, with many noting a decrease in airborne dust. The intensive cleaning drive has not only enhanced the city’s cleanliness but also demonstrated its utility in mitigating air pollution.
