Rs. 7.48 crore recovered in pending dues
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken stringent action against property tax defaulters, recovering Rs. 7.48 crore in dues from 30 individuals following the seizure of properties. The action, which forms part of an ongoing crackdown on defaulters, aims to ensure timely payment of property taxes, a crucial source of revenue for the corporation that funds essential civic amenities in the city.
The initiative, overseen by NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, has targeted 128 defaulters who failed to respond to repeated appeals and notices. After receiving notices, 30 defaulters cleared their dues, contributing Rs. 7.48 crore to the corporation's coffers.
In particular, three defaulters from Amey Co-op Housing Society had their properties locked and sealed after ignoring multiple requests to settle their outstanding taxes.
In line with the tax recovery process, a list of major defaulters, each owing more than Rs. 1 lakh, was prepared under the guidance of Dr. Shinde. Notices were issued to over 8,000 large defaulters, giving them a seven-day window to clear their arrears.
Deputy Commissioner of the Property Tax Department, Sharad Pawar, confirmed that the properties of 128 defaulters who failed to respond to the notices were seized.
In a bid to further enforce compliance, the corporation plans to disconnect water supplies to societies with outstanding dues. Additionally, properties that have been seized but remain unpaid will be auctioned to recover the dues.
With property tax playing a vital role in funding the civic services and infrastructure in Navi Mumbai, the Municipal Corporation has called on all property owners to pay their taxes on time.
Dr. Kailas Shinde, the NMMC Commissioner, emphasised the importance of timely tax payments and appealed to citizens to settle any outstanding dues in order to contribute to the city's growth and development. “We urge everyone to fulfil their civic duty and help in the progress of Navi Mumbai,” he said.
