NMMC initiates Rs. 17 crore drain concreting project in Turbhe division

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has commenced the concreting of a major drain near the APMC traffic police post in the Vashi-Turbhe division. The project, aimed at improving drainage infrastructure, is estimated to cost ₹17.11 crore.

Navi Mumbai, being below sea level, relies on holding ponds in each node to prevent seawater intrusion during high tide. Rainwater from the city's hilly regions flows into these holding ponds through natural stormwater drains, which are currently unpaved. However, these raw drains frequently get clogged with silt, requiring significant annual expenditure by the Municipal Corporation for maintenance.

The current project focuses on a drain that extends from the APMC Traffic Police Post to Arenja Corner Signal in Turbhe. This drain often accumulates silt due to the inflow of creek water during high tide, leading to overflow onto roads and causing foul odors in the surrounding area.

The concreting process will involve removing the accumulated silt, increasing the drain's depth, and widening its channel. This is expected to prevent tidal water from spilling onto roads, thereby providing much-needed relief to residents and businesses in the area.
