In an effort to reduce dust pollution and improve the city's air quality, a comprehensive 15-dasy deep cleaning drive has been initiated, set to run from December 30, 2023, to January 13, 2024 by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The campaign has been carried under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the drive focuses on thoroughly cleaning the main roads and footpaths across the city, particularly targeting areas that have accumulated hardened soil and dust.
The initiative, overseen by Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and executed by Dr. Ajay Gadade, Deputy Commissioner of Zone 1, and Santosh Warule, Deputy Commissioner of Zone 2, Solid Waste Management Department, employs a combination of manual labour and modern technology. The roads are being cleaned with the use of fogger machines that spray water sourced from the municipal sewage treatment plant, thereby conserving drinking water while effectively reducing the amount of dust in the air.
Each day, a department-wise schedule has been meticulously prepared, designating specific roads and areas for deep cleaning. The cleaning drive began on December 30 with an extensive cleanup from Amra Marg Uranphata in Belapur division to Diva Circle in Airoli division. Additional plans for the upcoming days include major areas such as Akshar Tower Road, Vashi Village Entrance, and several roads in Turbhe, Koparkhairane, and Ghansoli divisions.
The initiative is not only focused on cleaning but also aims to raise awareness about environmental conservation. A variety of roads, including those in high-traffic zones, will be cleaned daily, contributing to both improved aesthetics and air quality.
Key areas scheduled for deep cleaning in the coming days include major roads in sectors such as 30, 11, and 19, as well as prominent locations like the D Mart Circle and Vashi Railway Station. The final cleaning drive will take place on January 13, ensuring that all eight divisions of Navi Mumbai are covered.
