Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has earned a prestigious position as one of the top three cities in India in the Super Swachh League category in the Swachh Survekshan survey, securing its place among the nation’s leading cities with a population over one million. While this recognition is a significant achievement, it also carries the responsibility of maintaining and further improving the city’s sanitation standards, according to Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.

In a recent review meeting with municipal department heads, Dr. Shinde underscored the need for heightened efforts to uphold the city’s cleanliness and sanitation, calling for stricter monitoring of sanitation activities across the city. “Being part of the Super Swachh League is an honour, but it also calls for greater accountability. We must ensure our sanitation standards are not only maintained but continuously improved,” said Dr. Shinde.

As part of the city’s efforts to maintain its ranking, nodal officers have been appointed for each department to oversee sanitation based on the 10 key criteria outlined by the survey. Regional teams consisting of staff from sanitation, water supply, sewage, electricity, construction, and parks departments have been tasked with inspecting and implementing these standards. New officers have been appointed to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

This year’s Swachh Survekshan survey introduced a revised scoring system, prompting Dr. Shinde to focus on school cleanliness. "Cleanliness in educational institutions is crucial, and we must ensure that all listed criteria are thoroughly evaluated and fulfilled," he said.

Public participation plays a pivotal role in the city’s success in sanitation efforts. Dr. Shinde stressed the importance of community involvement and called for increased citizen engagement. "We must capitalise on the enthusiasm of our residents. Encouraging broader participation in sanitation activities will strengthen our efforts," he added.

To further engage the public, the NMMC plans more direct interaction with citizens, including visits to residential societies to discuss sanitation services and requirements, particularly focusing on waste segregation and processing. Additionally, the Commissioner has called for intensified cleanliness measures at tourist spots and high-traffic areas, and for the removal of abandoned vehicles through a bi-annual campaign.

As part of enhancing waste management, Dr. Shinde proposed the inclusion of waste corner zones in newly constructed buildings, which will be mandated during the building approval process.

To address citizen concerns, the NMMC has made its Public Grievance System accessible through its website and the MY NMMC app, enabling residents to easily register complaints. Dr. Shinde emphasized the importance of promptly addressing these complaints and updating complainants on the actions taken.

Dr. Shinde has urged all municipal officers and employees to contribute fully towards ensuring Navi Mumbai remains a model of cleanliness and sanitation. A report on these initiatives is expected to be submitted to the Commissioner’s office within the week.
