NMMC’s new institute aims to enhance healthcare services with advanced training and super-specialty facilities
In a significant development for healthcare in Navi Mumbai, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has received approval from the National Medical Commission to establish its own Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science. This milestone promises to elevate healthcare standards for the city's residents and strengthen the municipal health services, as confirmed by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Kailas Shinde.
The approval marks the culmination of extensive efforts at both the state and central government levels. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde played a crucial role by providing guidance and directing the relevant departments to expedite the process. Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar also contributed significantly, ensuring that necessary approvals were secured.
Thane Lok Sabha member Naresh Mhaske was instrumental in the process, working diligently with Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav and the Central Health Department. His persistent efforts and direct engagement led to the successful acquisition of the final permissions.
The new Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science, will begin operations with four key branches: Medicine (3 seats), Orthopaedics (2 seats), Gynaecology (8 seats), and Paediatrics (4 seats). The institute is also anticipated to receive approval for a Surgery branch in the near future.
To support the establishment of this institute, the NMMC has enhanced infrastructure at its Vashi and Nerul public hospitals, and has recruited a full complement of staff, including a Dean, professors, and other essential personnel.
The institute will offer advanced training for MBBS doctors, who will then be involved in treating patients at NMMC hospitals. It is also set to provide super-specialty services such as Medical Intensive Care, Paediatric Intensive Care, and Emergency and Trauma Services, thereby significantly improving the quality of healthcare available to Navi Mumbai’s residents.
