The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken strict action against 33 property tax defaulters in the city. As per an official the civic body recovered a total of Rs.5.12 crore, so far. This move comes after several warnings and notices were issued to individuals who failed to respond or clear their dues despite repeated reminders.
Under the guidance of NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the NMMC has now initiated property attachment proceedings to ensure recovery from long-standing defaulters.
Property tax is a key revenue source for NMMC, directly funding essential civic services and infrastructure projects. The corporation had set an ambitious target of Rs.900 crore for property tax collection in the fiscal year 2024-25, with Rs. 617 crore already collected to date.
However, a significant portion of this target remains unmet due to the lack of response from large defaulters.
In line with the ongoing recovery efforts, a list of defaulters with arrears exceeding Rs. 1 lakh has been compiled, and notices were issued to over 8,000 property owners.
Despite these notices, several individuals failed to comply, prompting the NMMC to take legal action, including property seizures. As of now, 33 defaulters have had their properties attached, and 10 of these defaulters have paid up, contributing Rs. 5.12 crore in outstanding taxes.
In one notable case, 68 commercial properties in the Ameya Co-operative Housing Society in Nerul, each owing over Rs. 1 lakh in property tax, are now under seizure. These properties, collectively amounting to Rs. 5.32 crore in outstanding dues, will be sealed by appointed officers.
“If the property owners do not settle the dues within five days, the properties will be auctioned to recover the outstanding amounts”, informed an official.
NMMC has also indicated that further actions will be taken, including disconnecting water supplies for societies with significant arrears. Auctioning properties will be pursued for those who continue to ignore notices even after seizure actions are taken.
Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde urged all property tax holders in Navi Mumbai to pay their dues on time, stressing that these taxes fund the city’s essential services. He also warned that defaulters who fail to act promptly would face strict legal action, including property seizures and auctions, and urged them not to wait until further action is necessary.
