The new seed collection centres will be located in the Mango Garden in Zone 1 and Nisarga Udyan in Zone 2. These centres will focus on the collection, preservation, and distribution of seeds from local and indigenous plant species, ensuring the conservation of native flora.
As a precursor to the establishment of these centres, the Garden Department will conduct workshops on seed ball production. These workshops will engage local citizens, providing them with hands-on training in creating seed balls and raising awareness about the importance of seed conservation.
The Seed Collection Centres will be equipped to manage the entire process of seed collection, preservation, and distribution. A detailed log book will be maintained at each centre, documenting essential information such as the name of the seed, species, date of collection, and the name of the collector. This systematic approach will help in tracking the seeds collected and ensuring their proper management.
The initiative under Majhi Vasundhara 5.0 reflects the commitment of the NMMC to foster community involvement in environmental conservation and to promote the use of native plant species in urban landscaping. By empowering residents to participate in seed collection and preservation, the program aims to enhance the ecological health of Navi Mumbai while also educating residents about the importance of biodiversity.
