NMMC to construct Folk Art Centre building in Ghansoli

The construction of a G+3 Folk Art Centre in Ghansoli is set to begin soon, providing citizens with a new cultural hub. The NMMC has initiated the necessary procedures to commence the project.
Once completed, this centre will be one of three entertainment facilities under the NMMC, offering a dedicated space for cultural and artistic activities. NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde has confirmed that budgetary provisions have been made for the project.

At present, Vishnudas Bhave Theatre in Vashi is Navi Mumbai’s primary cultural venue, with another theatre under construction in Airoli. The Folk Art Centre in Ghansoli will provide an additional platform for artists and performers, offering citizens a new avenue to explore and showcase folk art and cultural expressions.

The centre will be constructed on Plot No. 22, Sector 8, Ghansoli, which spans 3,542.28 sq. metres. This land was transferred from CIDCO to NMMC when the Ghansoli node was handed over. However, due to delays in project execution, land mafias took advantage of the situation and dumped debris from illegal constructions on the site.

Originally, when CIDCO transferred the plot, NMMC had named it 'Tamasha Theatre,' as displayed on a signboard. However, in the latest budget, the name has been revised to 'Folk Art Centre.'

Currently, tender approvals are in progress for debris removal and the construction of a security compound wall. Once the compound wall is completed, full-scale construction of the Folk Art Centre will commence, according to municipal sources.

Shinde has confirmed that work on the compound wall will commence soon, followed by further steps towards the centre’s construction. The required budgetary provisions have been made, ensuring the smooth execution of the project.
