NMMT’s Ghansoli depot is grappling with a severe shortage of operational buses with over 50% of its bus fleet in poor condition and standing idle. Consequently, it is cause serious inconvenience to commuters.
As many as 75 buses of the 114 with the Ghansoli depot, are non-operational, a source said on the condition of anonymity. Yogesh Kaduskar, NMMT general manager assured to look into the issue. “We are working towards ensuring that maximum buses are repaired soon and brought on the road to serve commuters,” the general manager said.
The buses have been rendered non-operational due to a range of technical issues, including engine failure, gear defects, chassis cracks, etc. Of the 39 buses still running, eight are reserved for school students, which leaves only 31 buses for daily passenger transport.
With the large number of buses rendered non-operational, passengers have begun questioning the reliability and safety of the few buses that are still operational. Poorly maintained buses could lead to mechanical failures while on the road, a Ghansoli resident said.
