Onion price in retail market heading towards Rs 100 amid decrease in arrivals

Onion prices have surged once again due to a decline in arrivals at the APMC market in Vashi. On Thursday, wholesale onion prices reached Rs 50-65 per kg, while in the retail market, prices have shot up to Rs 80-90. With the demand for old onions rising, the retail price is expected to soon breach the Rs 100 mark.

There were initial hopes that onion prices would stabilize with the arrival of new crops in the APMC market. While prices remained steady for a brief period, they have once again risen due to a drop in onion arrivals. Untimely rains have severely impacted onion production, causing fluctuating prices. On Thursday, 157 trucks entered the market, 20-25 of which carried old onions. The remainder consisted of new onions, but their prices have also increased due to the high demand for the older stock.

Old onions, previously priced at Rs 55-60, are now being sold for Rs 60-65 in the wholesale market, and retail prices have escalated to Rs 85-90. Traders have warned that if the current arrival trends continue, retail prices may soon exceed Rs 100.

Meanwhile, new onions, which were previously priced at Rs 30-50, are now being sold at Rs 45-55 per kg, as production has been affected by the heavy rains.
