The wholesale price of onions has seen a significant drop, with good-quality onions now available between Rs 12- Rs 15 per kg, bringing much-needed relief to consumers.
This decline is attributed to a surge in onion production, resulting in increased arrivals at the onion and potato market.
Currently, a steady supply of onions is arriving into the wholesale markets from Maharashtra's key onion-producing regions, including Nashik, Lasalgaon, Pune, and Otur.
On average, 100 trucks of onions are arriving daily, ensuring a surplus that has pushed prices downward. Traders predict that onion prices will continue to remain low for the next two months, further benefiting both retailers and consumers.
Last year during the same period, onion production suffered a major setback due to unseasonal rains, causing a sharp rise in prices. Wholesale onion prices had soared to Rs 50-Rs 60 per kg, while retail prices had escalated to Rs 60- Rs 80 per kg, straining household budgets.
