Operational crisis at Uran Gas Turbine Power Station sparks calls for urgent action

top-news

The Uran Gas Turbine Power Station, a pivotal government initiative, is facing an operational crisis attributed to the negligence of Chief Engineer Mohan Awhad. Despite its potential to generate 672 MW of electricity from six units, essential machinery, including two boilers and a steam turbine in Block A, remains out of order. This neglect has significantly reduced power generation, putting the plant's future at stake.

Established in 1982 and expanded in 1985 and 1994, the Uran Gas Turbine Power Station was India’s first natural gas-fired thermal power plant, initially boasting a capacity of 952 MW. However, years of mismanagement have eroded its potential. The six currently operational units now generate only 672 MW, with inefficient maintenance and oversight further contributing to the decline.

The most alarming incident occurred on October 9, 2022, when a fire and explosion rocked the facility, leading to the tragic deaths of one engineer and two workers, with two others severely injured. This disaster underscored the plant's severe safety lapses, yet the issues remain unresolved.

According to maintenance workers, Chief Engineer Awhad has admitted that continued neglect of the boilers and steam turbine in Block A could lead to another catastrophic explosion. Despite this dire warning, no significant corrective measures have been implemented, raising concerns for the safety of workers and nearby residents.

In light of Mumbai’s growing energy demands, evidenced by a citywide power outage on October 12, 2022, due to insufficient supply, there is mounting pressure on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the energy portfolio, to intervene. Local leaders, including Satyavan Bhagat, President of Uran Taluka MNS, have called for an immediate inquiry into Awhad’s handling of the project and the broader mismanagement at the plant.

Bhagat emphasized the urgency of appointing qualified personnel to oversee operations, warning that continued mismanagement could lead to further disasters. He urged CM Fadnavis to prioritize safety and efficiency at the Uran Gas Turbine Power Station to ensure it meets the region's growing energy needs.
