The proposed coastal highway project, set to connect Karanja-Revas in Raigad district to Reddi in Sindhudurg, has sparked controversy. Social activist Sachin Daur has raised concerns about the potential damage to the historical Dronagiri mountain, which the highway is slated to pass through. Daur has urged the government to build the highway without harming the mountain, emphasizing the need for proper consultation with affected farmers, landowners, and local villagers.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the coastal highway, which aims to provide an alternative route to the Mumbai-Goa highway, was conducted by then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The 498 km route from Revas to Reddi is expected to boost tourism. However, the project has faced opposition, particularly from the Mouje Chanje area in Uran taluka, where the government is attempting to acquire land and conduct surveys without involving local farmers and villagers.
Local farmers, social organizations, and villagers have expressed strong opposition to the construction of the highway through Dronagiri mountain, citing its historical and cultural significance. The government’s plan to survey the area and proceed with the project has led to protests, with villagers demanding that the route be altered to avoid disturbing the mountain.
On Tuesday, January 7th, a meeting was held at the Uran Tehsil Office with officials from the concerned departments, including Sub Divisional Officer Pawan Chandak and representatives from the Public Works Department, to discuss the project. Social activist Sachin Daur, along with other prominent local leaders such as Chanje Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Ajay Mhatre and Karanja Grama Mandal President Kalpesh Thali, voiced their opposition to the project as planned.
