Grand Double for Dhruv Shah

Talented paddler Sharveya Samant, showed great mettle and consistency during his gutsy performance against Shivam Shrivastav, before prevailing 4-2 in the Men’s Singles final of the Khar Gymkhana-TSTTA third District Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2024. Experienced campaigner Sampada Bhiwandkar on the other hand defeated the 18-year-old Ananya Chande 4-0 in the Women’s Singles final.

The 17-year-old youngster after having lost the opening game 3-11, bounced back to win the next three 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 against the 25-year-old experienced Shivam, only to lose the next narrowly 9-11, which allowed his rival a chance of making a comeback. High on confidence and showcasing deft skill sets both in defense and attack, Sharveya failed to make it to the championship round in his age category and won the sixth game 11-7 and a well-deserved Men's title at the Khar Gymkhana Table Tennis Hall.

Meanwhile, talented youngster Ananya Chande was denied from winning a double crown as she suffered a straight-game defeat against her senior rival Sampada Bhiwandkar in the Women’s Singles final. Bhiwandkar defeated the 18-year-old Ananya 11-7, 11-6, 11-5, and 11-8.

Dhruv Shah however bagged a grand double winning the Boys’ Under-17 and Under-19 Singles winners trophy. In the Under-17 final, Dhruv comfortably defeated Zain Shaikh in three straight games 11-5, 11-8, and 11-9. He later returned to the tables and quashed the aspirations of Dev Hingorany posting a hard-fought 15-13, 11-4, 12-10, and 11-9 to pocket the Under-19 title .

Earlier in the Women’s Semi-finals 18-year-old Ananya, had brushed aside the challenge from Urvi Churi, winning in four straight games 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, and 11-5, while Sampada Bhiwandkar, prevailed over Sana D’Souza without dropping a game in the other semis12-10, 11-6, 11-5, and 11-7.

While in the Under-19 Semi-finals, Ananya after dropping the opening game 4-11, against Vaishnavi Jaiswal, fought back hard to win the next three en-route for a place in the final. In the second Semi-final, Risha Mirchandani breezed past Urvi Churi 11-7, 12-10, and 11-5.

In the Men’s Semi-finals, young talent Sharveya Samant got the better of Sagar Kasture 14-12, 11-4, 11-8, and 11-2, while Shivam Shrivastav managed to overcome Vineet Deepak in six closely contested games before winning 11-6, 11-9, 12-10, 11-13, 8-11, and 11-5.

Mumbai’s young talent Dhruv Shah defeated Dev Hingorany 11-13, 11-5, 12-10, and 11-8 in the Under-17 last four match and later put it across Sharveya Samant posting a straight games 11-9, 11-9, and 11-8 victory in the Under-17 Semis to be in line for a grand double.
