This compassionate initiative was carried out in a three-day campaign
In a significant step towards animal welfare, PawsConnect 2.0 - Collars, Care, and Cuisine! successfully vaccinated, collared, and fed over 270 street dogs in Panvel. The three-day initiative, held from 28th to 30th January, was organised by a dedicated team of volunteers aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of stray animals while fostering a compassionate community.
Building on the success of PawsConnect 2023-24, this year’s campaign expanded its reach across multiple locations, including Vichumbe, Usarli, Devad, Wakadi, Khanav, and Sukhapur, with a target of over 250 dogs. Led by Rtr. Yogiraj Mali (President), Rtr. Aditi Pitale (Secretary), and Rtr. Bhoomiraj Tandel (Vice-President), the project was supported by sponsors Bhutayada Foundation, In Defence of Animals, SuperPets Veterinary Multispecialty, and Pawsitivity, which provided reflective collars to enhance canine safety.
In the first phase, volunteers gathered at the Vichumbe police station and met with the animal rescue team to begin the vaccination drive. The event was officially inaugurated with a collaring ceremony, after which teams dispersed to vaccinate, collar, and feed street dogs. By the end of the first day, 100 dogs had received medical care.
In the second phase, there was an increase in participation, volunteers covered more areas, vaccinating and collaring an additional 170 dogs. The structured approach allowed the team to surpass their target on the second day, reaching over 270 strays.
On the third and final day which included the third phase, the focus was on feeding the dogs, with volunteers distributing food across various neighbourhoods. Local residents actively participated, demonstrating growing community support for animal welfare. The initiative concluded with a vote of thanks from Vice-President Bhoomiraj Tandel, acknowledging the efforts of all involved.
The initiative drew praise from volunteers and animal welfare advocates. Rtr. Pratyusha Roy commended the effort, saying, “A crucial step towards ensuring the safety of our furry friends and the community. Kudos to the entire team!" Meanwhile, Mayura Virdikar, founder of Bhutayada Organisation, noted, "The volunteers were incredibly supportive, and the event had a significant impact on the community.”
Financially, PawsConnect 2.0 raised Rs.8,052, with expenses of Rs.7,550, resulting in a Rs.502 surplus. The initiative saw active participation from 40 attendees, including 29 club members and 11 guests, reinforcing the community’s commitment to animal welfare.
PawsConnect continues to set a precedent for sustainable street animal care, fostering a safer and more compassionate environment for stray dogs in Panvel.
