In an initiative led by Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a heartfelt appeal to residents, urging them to celebrate an environment-friendly Diwali as part of the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 5.0 campaign. This initiative aims to mitigate air pollution associated with fireworks and promote eco-friendly festivities.
The growing concerns of global climate change highlight the urgent need for action. Air pollution is a significant contributor to climate change and global warming, with emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur, and other harmful gases surging due to the use of firecrackers during festivals. These toxic emissions not only threaten air quality but also harm plants, birds, animals, and human health. The Municipal Corporation emphasizes that citizens must take personal responsibility to combat air pollution.
In line with the directives of the National Green Tribunal, the Panvel Municipal Corporation is implementing various remedial schemes and public awareness activities to enhance air quality in the region. An appeal has been made to the residents: “Under Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 5.0, let us celebrate firecracker-free, waste-free, pollution-free, and environment-friendly green festivals. Citizens are encouraged to minimize the use of firecrackers during the Diwali season and to avoid the gas and noise associated with them”.
Furthermore, the Hon'ble Supreme Court has issued guidelines concerning the adverse effects of firecrackers. In accordance with instructions from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, the public is urged to limit firecracker usage to before 10 p.m. to mitigate noise pollution and its impact on the community.
