In a significant move to address air pollution, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued notices to 151 establishments within its jurisdiction, mandating the use of clean and environmentally friendly fuel for tandoors in bakeries, hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and food outlets.
This initiative aligns with the directives from the Bombay High Court, which has taken a proactive stance by filing a public interest litigation (PIL) to tackle the escalating pollution levels in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate announced that the Municipal Corporation is actively implementing preventive measures under the guidance of PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale. The campaign aims to curb air pollution by ensuring that food establishments transition away from polluting fuels such as coal and wood.
The notices specifically instruct the 151 establishments identified as polluters to switch to cleaner fuel options, including electric and CNG-powered grates for their ovens. The use of coal or wood as fuel is now strictly prohibited.
Additionally, PMC has emphasized the necessity of installing appropriate air pollution control equipment, such as scrubbers and modern chimneys, to minimize hazardous gas emissions. Regular maintenance and repair of tandoor equipment are also required to prevent air pollution.
Out of the 511 food establishments operating within the municipal limits, 359 are already utilizing electricity and gas, while the remaining 151 continue to rely on coal and wood. PMC has urged these establishments to promptly inform them about the implementation of the mandated measures.
