In a major step towards eliminating rabies, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched the “Zero Rabies Eradication Program”. The initiative, aimed at completely eradicating rabies within the municipal limits, was inaugurated on 28th February, at Adya Krantiveer Vasudev Balwant Phadke Theatre by MLA Prashant Thakur.
The launch event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Kailas Gawde, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anand Gosavi, Assistant Commissioner Dr. Rupali Mane, Veterinary Officer Dr. Bhagwan Geete, and Dr. Madhulika Lad.
Under the guidance of PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, the program aligns with the National Action Plan for Dog-Mediated Rabies Elimination from India by 2030.
It focuses on annual anti-rabies vaccinations for stray dogs in the municipal area and public awareness campaigns about rabies prevention and treatment.
Rabies remains a major global health concern, with over 59,000 deaths annually, 36% of which occur in India alone. Many people remain unaware of medical treatment after a dog bite, and once rabies develops, it is 100% fatal. The only effective solution is preventive vaccination for both humans and animals.
To implement the initiative, PMC has partnered with the Universal Animal Welfare Organization, which will conduct ward-wise vaccination of approximately 17,500 stray dogs every year.
Additionally, the Municipal Corporation plans to set up an Integrated Dog Bite Management Protocol and a Model Anti-Rabies Clinic to provide better healthcare and preventive measures against rabies in the city.
