In a significant move for animal welfare, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to establish the first dedicated crematorium for animals in Kharghar. This long-awaited project aims to address the needs of animal lovers and stray feeders who have advocated for such a facility for years.
Once completed, it will be the only animal crematorium within the PMC and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) jurisdictions.
Under the leadership of PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, the project is now on the fast track. Dr. Anand Gosavi, Chief Medical Officer of PMC, and Dr. Bhagwan Gite, a veterinary doctor with the corporation, confirmed that the proposal has received the necessary approvals, and construction is expected to begin shortly.
“The city engineers will soon commence the construction work of the crematorium, and we hope to complete it within 2-3 months”, Dr. Gosavi said.
The crematorium will utilize gas for its operations and is designed to accommodate both large and small animals, providing a dignified farewell for pets and strays alike.
Seema Tank, the Animal Officer, along with former Corporator Nilesh Bawaskar, has been a vocal advocate for this initiative, raising the issue multiple times in meetings with PMC officials.
On February 10th, Seema Tank reiterated the urgent need for the crematorium during a discussion with the Chief Medical Officer, presenting a formal request letter to emphasize the importance of the project.
She highlighted the alarming increase in animal accidents, which have surged tenfold in recent times. "Carcasses are often discarded improperly, leading to environmental hazards and health risks for humans," she explained.
Currently, pet owners are forced to transport their deceased animals to crematoriums located in Parel, incurring significant costs for ambulance services and last rites. “The establishment of this crematorium will provide a respectful and dignified option for the final journey of these mute creatures,” Tank added, expressing hope that it will improve the treatment of deceased animals.
