Located in Vasai East, the Pragati Club is marking its Silver Jubilee by hosting a memorable Sharadiya Durgotsav under the theme “Reunion of Bengalis.” Vasai East, an old township in Maharashtra, is home to the historic Shivaji Maharaj Fort, which symbolizes the region's rich legacy. Against this backdrop, the popular Bengali club continues to celebrate its 25th year of Durga Puja, preserving and promoting Bengali traditions and culture.

The club holds a special place in the hearts of its members, who view it not merely as a commercial entity but as a close-knit family, referred to as Pragati Parivar, according to President Subroto Roy. Founded by the late Dr. Deepak Biswas, a former DRDO scientist, Pragati Club organizes a family-oriented puja instead of a larger, public celebration.

This year’s Durgotsav features various initiatives, including blood donation camps, medical camps, and clothing distribution, all aimed at celebrating the milestone of 25 years of Durga Puja. A major highlight of the Silver Jubilee is the 13-foot tall idol of Maa Durga, themed “Mrinmayee Maa.” The massive mandap, designed to resemble a Buddha temple and adorned with Shola (goose plant) crafts, is another key attraction, featuring a grand Buddha idol to welcome visitors.

Throughout the four-day celebration, a ‘Bhandara’ (community feast) will be organized for people from all communities, with thousands expected to attend, especially on ‘Ashtami’. A free medical camp is scheduled for October 11, 2024, open to all, and the evening will feature a special performance by the ‘Kaya’ band.

Pragati is a non-profit, socio-cultural association dedicated to celebrating and preserving Bengali and Indian culture in Vasai. Over the decades, the association has grown significantly, currently boasting over 1,000 member families from diverse backgrounds, all contributing to nation-building efforts in the Vasai-Virar region. Pragati has consistently aimed to enhance community life through social and cultural upliftment, with Durga Puja serving as a vital contribution that showcases the intricate traditions of Bengal through elaborate rituals and artistic displays in front of the goddess Durga’s idol.
