The vibrant nine-day Navaratri festival commenced on Thursday, 3rd October, with the ceremonious ‘Ghata Sthapana’ and is being celebrated with full enthusiasm and devotion. This year, Vashi’s Pragati Mitra Mandal, under the leadership of Raju Shinde, is marking its 36th year with a socially significant theme focused on "Women’s Safety, Security, and a Drug-Free Society." The event is being held at Meenatai Thackeray Udyan, Sector 15/16, Vashi.

The highlight of the celebration is the stunning 6-foot-tall Durga idol, crafted from woolen threads, woollen balls, and other woollen objects (gonde), symbolizing strength and creativity. Devotees are immersed in daily rituals, including ‘Navami Havan’ and evening aartis, while ‘Dandiya’ remains a popular draw for all age groups. However, this year's festivities include a call for social responsibility, with participants urged to focus on messages of women’s safety, security, and empowerment during the ‘Dandiya’ sessions.

A special ‘Dhamaal Dandiya’ event is scheduled for the evening of 6th October, organized in collaboration with Maharashtra Sakhi and Sony Marathi, and sponsored by Pragati Mitra Mandal. This event will be attended by officials from the Maharashtra Prohibition Board, with Sri Sameer Wankhede as the Chief Guest, who will raise awareness about the menace of drugs.

Additional activities include a drawing and essay competition for children on Sunday, 6th October. The grand finale will take place on ‘Vijaya Dashami’, Saturday, 12th October, with the symbolic ‘Ravan Dahan’, promoting the message of "Victory over Evils."

"This year, we are emphasizing the need for everyone in society to unite and take action against atrocities on women," shared Vikram (Raju) Shinde, highlighting the festival’s focus on ensuring a safe and secure environment for all citizens.
