Poses health and safety concerns

Navi Mumbai: Despite a ban imposed by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on feeding pigeons, residents along Palm Beach Road in Nerul continue to engage in the practice, heightening public health and safety concerns. The large-scale feeding attracts flocks of pigeons, exacerbating sanitation issues and increasing the risk of disease transmission in the community.

Pigeon droppings, which are known to harbour bacteria and fungi, present significant health hazards, including respiratory infections. The droppings are also corrosive, causing damage to buildings along the road, staining walls, clogging drainage systems, and even leading to structural deterioration. "Feeding pigeons is a tradition for many of us," a resident said, reflecting the sentiment that the birds are part of the community's natural setting.

However, this practice has not been welcomed by all. “This kindness is backfiring and is a menace,” commented a regular biker. “Pigeons fly unpredictably and can pose a serious safety risk to road users. Slipping or skidding due to sudden pigeon activity is a real danger.”

Health experts are raising alarms over the unchecked pigeon population. Dr. Ashok Patil, a physician at MGM Hospital, highlighted the health risks: “Feeding pigeons may appear harmless, but it contributes to the spread of diseases affecting the lungs and increases infection risks, especially for asthmatic patients.”

The NMMC's ban aims to mitigate these issues, but adherence remains a challenge. Community awareness and stricter enforcement may be needed to address the ongoing health and safety risks posed by the pigeon feeding along Palm Beach Road.
