Residents demand action against dust pollution from ready mix concrete plants in Navi Mumbai

The numerous ready mix concrete plants operating in the MIDC area from Turbhe to Khairane are reportedly flouting Pollution Control Board regulations, leading to severe dust pollution, posing a significant health risk to local residents. The situation has escalated to the point where citizens are suffering from respiratory diseases, prompting urgent calls for intervention from the authorities.

Residents and workers in the vicinity of these concrete plants have expressed their distress over the constant dust clouds that envelop the area, making it difficult to breathe and are left with no options and have to cover their noses with handkerchiefs while navigating through the dust-laden roads.

The Turbhe MIDC area is home to approximately 40 concrete plants, with a mix of compliance and non-compliance regarding Pollution Control Board regulations. While some plants adhere to the rules, many others are reportedly operating without regard for environmental standards. This negligence has led to a marked increase in pollution levels, endangering the health of residents in nearby urban settlements, including Indira Nagar, Ganapati Pada, Bonsari village, and Dag Khani. Many residents have reported suffering from asthma and other respiratory ailments.

Mahesh Kotivale, Deputy City Chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), emphasized the urgent need for the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to take decisive action against the offending concrete plants. "The health of our citizens is at stake, and we cannot allow these plants to operate unchecked," he stated. Despite repeated written complaints to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, residents claim that no substantial action has been taken to address the issue.
