Residents raise alarm over boozing addas and littering at Kharghar Hills

A growing issue of illegal alcohol consumption and littering at Kharghar Hills, particularly near Hyde Park, has caught the attention of local residents, raising serious concerns about public safety and environmental harm.

Residents and local activists are urging the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) and forest officials to take swift action to curb the illegal gatherings and alcohol consumption that have become a common sight in the area.

A recent photo taken by a resident shows a group of individuals openly drinking alcohol in broad daylight at the scenic hill location. This has sparked concern among the locals about both public safety and the increasing litter in the area, which is detracting from the natural beauty of the location.

Manas Jadhav, a resident of Sector 35G, expressed his frustration, “I have repeatedly asked PMC to put up boards banning liquor to discourage people from bringing alcohol to the hills. Installing dustbins would also help encourage visitors to dispose of their trash responsibly,” he said. Jadhav also highlighted that volunteers would be willing to help clean up if such measures were implemented.

Pranali Gaitonde, another resident, emphasized the lack of enforcement and visible deterrents in the area, stating, “The rise of these illegal boozing spots is disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the hills and harming the environment. We hope the authorities will take action by installing warning signs and providing waste disposal options.”

Gaitonde also voiced safety concerns, particularly for hikers visiting the area. “The presence of alcohol-fuelled gatherings could lead to antisocial behaviour, creating a threat for people who come here to seek tranquillity,” she added.
