Residents raise safety concerns over junction in Sector 19, Kharghar

Residents of Kharghar have raised safety concerns over frequent accidents at the Sector 19 junction along the Navi Mumbai Metro, calling for immediate traffic management measures. The junction, located beneath the elevated metro line, experiences heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, making it a hotspot for mishaps.

Kharghar resident Nakkul Pathak took to social media to highlight the issue, tagging the Panvel Municipal Corporation (@PanvelCorp) and Navi Mumbai Police (@Navimumpolice).

He tweeted saying, “There is a junction in Sector 19, Kharghar; every day we see a lot of accidents happening. Please install traffic signals and speed breakers,” Pathak wrote, sharing images of the junction to underline the urgency.

However, Subhash Kabnur, another Kharghar resident, proposed a different perspective, advocating for disciplined road usage instead of additional signals. “There is already a signal at Haware Tiara junction. Signals at every junction will be a nightmare. We need lane markings, lane discipline, respect for road users, roadworthy vehicles, and strict enforcement of rules,” he said.

Images of the junction reveal unorganised traffic, unclear lane markings, and a lack of pedestrian crossings or speed control measures. The area serves as a vital link between residential and commercial zones, further intensifying its traffic load.

Residents have suggested the following measures to address the issues:

·        Lane markings and signage to organise vehicular movement.

·        Speed breakers to control speeding near the junction.

·        Improved pedestrian crossings for safe transit.

·        Strict enforcement of traffic rules to ensure discipline on the road.
