MBMC has launched a strict enforcement drive against the use and sale of single-use plastic. On April 9, civic teams led by the Solid Waste Management Department conducted inspections across the city, penalising vendors and shopkeepers found violating the plastic ban.

During the operation, officials seized around 25 kg of banned plastic material, including carry bags and disposable items such as plates, glasses, and thermocol products. A total fine of Rs. 20,000 was collected from violators for illegal plastic use, while an additional Rs. 1,000 was imposed for maintaining unhygienic surroundings.

The state government has enforced a statewide ban on single-use plastic. However, continued use by vendors and citizens has led to increased environmental and health hazards, especially at waste processing units where workers manually sort discarded plastic.

MBMC has warned that repeat offenders will face stricter penalties, Rs. 5,000 for the first offence, Rs. 10,000 for the second, and Rs. 25,000 for the third, along with possible criminal action. Authorities have urged hawkers and retailers, to cooperate and avoid using banned plastic products.
