Dombivli: Sangrash Nikam (7) had resolved to swim 17 km in the sea from Atal Setu to Gateway of India. On April 18, he completed the 17 km distance in 3. 11 hours.
He started at 3:45 am, after applying oil to his body and worshipping the sea, Sangrash started swimming from Atal Setu. He swam in the moonlight in the Arabian Sea. He started swimming under the supervision of Hiren Ranpura, an inspector of the Maharashtra State Amateur Swimming Association.
Increasing pollution in the sea, the effect of tides, waves created by big boats, and the oil slick on the water near the Gateway of India – all of these made it difficult for him. Feeling nauseous, getting salt water in his mouth, and having to swim against the current made things even more difficult.
Nevertheless, Sangrash, with determination, persevered and kept swimming without taking a single break. He reached the Gateway of India at 6:56 am.
Upon reaching the Gateway of India, he was enthusiastically welcomed by coaches, parents and relatives.
