The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld the Bombay High Court's (HC) decision, paving the way for the construction of a long-awaited sports complex in Ghansoli. The court dismissed the appeal filed by CIDCO and private developer Progressive Homes, who had challenged the High Court's ruling that favoured the development of the sports complex at the original site.
The case dates back to when CIDCO had initially allotted the land designated for the sports complex in Ghansoli to a private developer, turning the plot into a residential project. This decision sparked public outcry, leading citizens to file a petition challenging the move. The petition argued that the land, initially earmarked for a sports complex, should remain reserved for public use.
On July 1, 2024, the Bombay High Court ruled in favour of the petitioners, ordering that the sports complex be built on the 78-acre plot in Ghansoli at Sectors 12 and 13, as originally planned. The court quashed CIDCO's decision to reallocate the land for residential development and rejected the Maharashtra government's proposal to relocate the project to Mangaon.
CIDCO and Progressive Homes appealed to the Supreme Court, but Justice Chandrachud, hearing the case on November 4, 2024, dismissed their petition. The decision firmly supports the creation of the Ghansoli Sports Complex under the jurisdiction of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
