Prices increase by Rs.50 - Rs.60, affecting festival preparations
As Makar Sankranti approaches, the price of sesame seeds has seen a sudden spike, causing a major inconvenience to households preparing for the festival. The retail price of sesame seeds, which was around Rs.130 to Rs.160 per kg just a month ago, has risen to Rs. 180 to Rs. 260 per kg, marking an increase of Rs.50- Rs.60.
Sesame seeds hold special significance during Makar Sankranti, traditionally used to make sweet treats like chikki and laddus. However, this year, the rising cost of sesame seeds is putting a strain on those preparing for the festival.
The primary reason for this price hike is the continuous decline in sesame seed production in recent years. Traditionally, many farmers grew sesame, but due to changing agricultural patterns and climate change, production has sharply declined. As a result, the price of sesame seeds has seen a consistent upward trend.
Consumers have also raised concerns about traders artificially inflating prices, especially as demand for sesame products increases during Makar Sankranti. With the festival just four days away, this price hike is further exacerbating the issue, leading to added financial strain for many households.
The price hike in wholesale markets has had a cascading effect on retail prices, making it even more difficult for housewives, who rely on these ingredients for festival preparations, to afford the required quantities.
