Dubai: India captain Shubman Gill was on Tuesday, October 13, named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September for a record fifth time, while opener Shafali Verma clinched the women’s honour following her impressive performances in the Asia Cup and the Asian Games.
Gill matched West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who has also won the ICC Player of the Month award five times. The Indian skipper had previously received the honour in January and September 2023, and February and July 2025.
The 27-year-old accumulated 333 runs in the first two ODIs against the West Indies, including a century and a record-breaking double hundred. He scored 110 in the opening match in Thiruvananthapuram before smashing an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls in the second ODI, helping India chase down 406 with eight wickets in hand and 39 balls to spare.
“It feels fantastic to win my fifth ICC Player of the Month award, and I am grateful to the panel for this honour,” Gill said.
Shafali, meanwhile, secured her second monthly award after previously winning it in November last year following her match-winning performance in the Women’s World Cup final against South Africa.
The 22-year-old was India’s leading run-scorer in the Women’s Asia Cup, aggregating 360 runs at a strike rate of 184.61. She also took six wickets during the period.
At the Asian Games, Shafali scored an unbeaten 100 against Bangladesh in the semifinal and made 48 in the final against Sri Lanka, helping India secure gold.
“It is an incredible honour to win the ICC Player of the Month award again,” Shafali said, adding that her performances in the Asia Cup and Asian Games had made the recognition particularly special.
The awards were decided through voting by registered fans and an expert panel comprising former international players and media representatives.
