Singapore University students visit NMMC to exchange knowledge on sustainable development

Students from the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University recently visited the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Headquarters as part of their educational tour to India. The purpose of the visit was to study sustainable urban development practices, gain insights into eco-friendly municipal initiatives, and exchange knowledge for a better future.
The visit was organised in coordination with the Jio Institute, run by the Reliance Foundation Institute of Education and Research. A delegation comprising 10 students, along with senior faculty members, explored Navi Mumbai’s unique infrastructure, developmental projects, and environmental initiatives.
During their interaction with NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the students were introduced to the distinguishing features of Navi Mumbai. Dr Shinde highlighted the city’s efficient urban planning, ongoing infrastructure projects, and its commitment to sustainable development. The students expressed their admiration for Navi Mumbai’s modern approach to city management and its eco-conscious initiatives.
The Singapore study group, which is on a tour to examine market opportunities and investment trends in India, is also conducting research into the country’s advancements in information and technology (IT) sectors. A key focus of their visit was understanding how Indian cities integrate sustainable and eco-friendly methods into development processes.
Navi Mumbai, recognised as one of the most efficient municipal corporations in India, served as an ideal case study. The delegation received detailed insights into critical urban management systems, including:
· Solid waste management
· Water supply and sewage systems
· Rainwater management
· Mangrove conservation
· Miyawaki urban forests
· Air quality improvement initiatives
· Solar energy projects
· Energy-saving practices in street lighting
· Recycled water usage for parks and gardens
Municipal Secretary Mrs. Chitra Baviskar coordinated the visit and ensured a smooth exchange of information. Faculty members accompanying the students included Dr. Seshan Ramaswamy (Head of Marketing Department), Prof. Surinder Kaur (Head of Student Affairs), Prof. Avinash Jha (Manager), and Mr. Jayendra Bhosale (Security Department Guide, Jio Institute).
