Sports enthusiasts push for leasing of sports complex under Sanpada flyover

The Sports Complex under the Sanpada flyover, developed by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) engineering department, has become a popular hub for sports-loving residents, including senior citizens, women, and men. Built with a community-oriented approach, the sports complex currently remains under NMMC's management. However, local sports enthusiasts have expressed a demand to lease the facility to a sports organization, suggesting that doing so would benefit the municipal corporation financially and ensure better maintenance and regulated use.

Located in the upscale Palm Beach area of Sanpada Sonkhar, the complex serves a community of over 30,000 residents spread across nine sectors in eastern Sanpada. Despite its popularity, the area offers limited recreational spaces, with only one public park and a small ground, which are insufficient for the growing population. The need for a proper sports facility led to local BJP leader and former corporator Vyjayanti Bhagat pushing for the establishment of the Sports Complex, which was successfully inaugurated a year ago due to her persistent efforts.

The complex, envisioned and executed under the guidance of then Chief City Engineer Sanjay Desai and his engineering team, transformed a previously unused open space into a well-equipped sports facility. It has since become a favourite destination for fitness enthusiasts who utilize the space for various activities, including yoga, throughout the day.

However, concerns have been raised by some sports players regarding the overuse of the facility. With no security personnel or staff to oversee its operations, the complex reportedly suffers from inadequate maintenance and management. To address these issues, several local sports organizations have written to NMMC, urging the administration to establish clear policies for leasing the sports complex.

Sports lovers suggest that if a voluntary sports organization takes charge of the complex on lease, it could generate revenue for NMMC while ensuring better upkeep. Leasing the facility would allow for a more structured daily operation, preventing excessive use and preserving the complex for future generations.
