Navi Mumbai: Vashi Railway Station, has recently seen an increasing number of stray dogs lounging on its platforms, causing concern among commuters. Passengers have expressed discomfort as the animals often occupy spaces near ticket counters, waiting areas, and the platforms, sometimes obstructing foot traffic.
Commuters navigating the platform are increasingly finding themselves having to sidestep or even stop in their tracks to avoid stepping on the animals, particularly during rush hours when the station sees a surge in foot traffic. While some commuters find the sight of the dogs sleeping harmless, others worry about hygiene and safety. Ramesh Raut, one of the regular commuters said, “The dogs are usually harmless, but during the rush hours, it gets difficult to avoid them. It's especially tricky if you're running late for a train.”
Sanika Lanjekar, another commuter said, “The station could be cleaner, and the dogs should be moved to a safer place. It's a health concern, and with so many people walking around, it can be dangerous for both the dogs and the passengers.”
Yashna Deodhar, one of the college students said, “I love animals, but sometimes it feels unsafe with kids around. Some of the dogs can be a little unpredictable, especially if they’re distressed.”
While many commuters are frustrated by the situation, others show empathy for the dogs, viewing them as part of the station’s everyday landscape. “I don’t mind the dogs at all. They don’t cause trouble, and they’re just trying to survive. It’s not their fault they’re here. I just wish the station could be a little cleaner around them or at least they should be provided with a proper shelter,” said Meera Pandya, a regular commuter.
