Sujatha Ranganathan, a resident of Seawoods, Navi Mumbai, proudly celebrates her 27th year of the traditional South Indian festival of Golu. For Sujatha, Golu is more than just a display of dolls; it is a vibrant expression of culture, spirituality, and community.

Golu, a beloved tradition in South Indian households during Navaratri, involves arranging dolls in steps, each representing a specific hierarchy of existence. The display begins with deities at the top, followed by avatars, gurus, and finally, human beings. This thoughtful arrangement serves as a poignant reminder to stay grounded and reflect on one’s place in the universe.

This year, Sujatha has chosen an inspiring theme for her Golu display “Sabari Malai, Saranam Iyyappa, and Nari Shakthi,” focusing on the essence of woman power. Through this theme, she aims to highlight the strength and significance of women in society, encouraging the younger generation to embrace and celebrate these values. By incorporating educational elements into her Golu, Sujatha hopes to help children learn about their culture and religion through engaging stories.

Over the years, Sujatha has embraced various themes for her Golu, each rich in cultural significance. Past displays have included Ganesh Visarjan, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Tirupati Brahmotsavam, Marriage, and Meenakshi Kalyanam. Each theme is meticulously curated to reflect different aspects of her cultural heritage, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the narratives and traditions of South India.

In addition to the stunning visual display, Sujatha incorporates spiritual practices into her daily routine during Navaratri. Every day, she engages in shloka chanting, creating an atmosphere of devotion and reverence. In the evenings, she warmly invites friends and family for Darshan and Prasad, fostering a sense of community and shared celebration.

Sujatha credits her mother as her greatest inspiration, as it was she who instilled in her the importance of this cherished tradition. With the unwavering support of her family, Sujatha is encouraged to make her Golu display bigger and better each year, ensuring that this beautiful tradition continues to thrive in her home.
